Tale of two honeys

cyc honey
Look at the background — the dark honey was gathered by the bees in this location in the middle of town.

I finally had the chance to photograph an example of different honey harvests. The bottles in the photo came from the same season. The dark honey is urban, the light honey is suburban. I’ve seen similar examples of prairie honey and timber honey (same land, same season.). We also had a fun honey sampling at a recent bee keeper meeting — honey tasting from hives all over the metro. Honey colors and flavors are results of the forage — the trees and non-woody plants that the honey bees use for food. Bees will fly to the most convenient source to get the nutrients the hive needs at the time of forage.
