Sensitive skin…and eyes

Fast forward from my last sensitive skin post to late Sept. 2011. We get a high efficiency washer and dryer.

With our old washer and dryer, we used Tide Free and Gentle liquid. Liquid because powder doesn’t always dissolve, which leaves little bleached spots on clothing. (Just like my grandma said.) With h.e. machines, liquid detergents have animal fat, which causes the rubber seal of the washer to break down. Additionally, regular detergent can lead to the growth of mildew and mold because the “additional suds can escape the drum and leave residual moisture within the washing machine.” (source) [This was the undoing of Maytag with the Neptune.]  The salesman suggested a washing machine cleaner if we opted to use liquid detergent — monthly use to keep the rubber seal intact.

We chose to use Tide h.e. powder. My grandma had sensitive skin — dyes bothered her, among other things — and her dermatologist advised her to use Tide, fragrance and all.

I am allergic to it.

My pillowcase was the worst, causing the skin around my eyes, nose, ears, and corners of my mouth to itch and get extremely flaky. My eyeballs and eyelids became swollen. I couldn’t open my eyes in the morning.

  1. Can you make your own powedered detergent? I use one bar of grated soap, 2 C Borax, and 2 C washing soda. You can add essential oils if you are so inclinded. I’m not certain how much you’d add per load in a front loader, but I use 1/4 C in a standard washer.

    1. I used to do this but stopped because my brother used to mock me for it, I am glad to know I am not the only one and I will show him this post next time he has a go at me!

  2. Oh no! I had that happen to me when I switched to some Bounce dryer sheets. I was broke out everywhere and my eyes swelled up too! I use Tide Free but goodness with your reaction I would be scared to use that! Anything floral breaks me out terribly…I can use the Clean Breeze and be ok. You poor thing.

  3. Whoa, I had no idea that liquid detergent had animal fat in it. Kind of gross.
I’m so sorry you had that reaction! Hopefully these other ladies can point you in the right direction…I have no alternative ideas 🙁
