The junk food ban: Eight days in

Life without (most) white flour and white sugar

I wrote about the junk food ban earlier, and thought I’d give an update. The first reactions I got were

— My SIL asking, “Nutella is junk food?”

— A cousin of Mr. TellBlast tweeting that such a ban was probably in order after Easter candy.

A reminder of what I’m not eating:

  • chips
  • chocolate
  • candy
  • cookies
  • cakes
  • donuts
  • muffins
  • pastries
  • white bread
  • fast food
  • nutella, peanut butter, similar spreads
  • ice cream

So how’s it going? It’s definitely not as difficult as I thought it might be. I already keep many items on the list out of the house.

Except for the peanut butter. I knew my biggest challenge would be banning the peanut butter. I eat it on toast, apples, carrots, celery, etc. The ban is the second most difficult when…

I feel the urge for sweets. I’ve used 100% whole wheat bread for toast accompanied by whatever strikes my fancy has been my go-to for night-time urges. Homemade jams and jellies or homegrown honey are typical toast toppers. Is that cheating?

I’m still confused about the white bread. Is this targeting white flour or white bread? For example, does a flour tortilla count as bread? What about whole wheat pizza crust, waffles, biscuits or corn bread? They contain white flour, but the end product is not white bread. So I’m abstaining 50% of the time on these items.

And the chocolate. I’m allowing non-solid chocolate, such as hot chocolate and mochas. I’m assuming that the target here is the fat content.
